In 1991, local business and property owners became affiliated with the National Main Street Center, an arm of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C.  The National Main Street Center specializes in the revitalization of traditional Downtowns across America.  Boasting a proven record of success, they’re working in over 1,650 towns.  We feel fortunate to be working with the National Main Street Center, the only preservation-based, Downtown revitalization specialists.

At the present time, Downtown Port Huron is one of the few designated MainStreet Communities in the State of Michigan.  Having completed our contracted services, we remain an active member of the MainStreet Network and use their resources and services regularly.

The MainStreet Approach is a proven framework for downtown development based on Membership, Promotion, Design and Economic Restructuring.  Every MainStreet community is unique.  This is how it's working in Downtown Port Huron:

DESIGN – The physical appearance and design of buildings, Streetscape and signage are part of the Design Committee’s responsibilities.  Restoration of structures within the district is carefully planned with attention to authentic detail.  The Military Street Historic District is in place, and the Design Committee reviews improvements and signage in the district.

PROMOTION – Special events and retail events (ring those cash registers!) in the downtown are planned and reviewed by the Promotion Committee.  Market data is gathered and reviewed to assist the Committee.

ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING – This committee concentrates on the financial aspects of Downtown.  Business retention, recruitment, real estate matters and market demographics help keep Downtown strong and financially viable.  A Business Support Program is also offered under this Committee.

MEMBERSHIP – The Membership Committee’s goals and objectives are to recruit and retain members in MainStreet, to improve communication within the membership, and increase member recognition and interaction.  MainStreet is built on partnerships and works together to achieve these goals.  Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization – we’ve got lots for everyone to do!  Communication is also a big part of our program – a monthly newsletter is distributed to members, local community leaders and media.
